To Premier Doug Ford & Sylvia Jones, the Minister of Health,
The growing frequency of critical ambulance shortages across Ontario is alarming, with dire consequences for patients who call 911 seeking emergency medical service. In worst-case scenarios, it leads to death.
I am concerned about myself, my loved ones, and the people in my community – will an ambulance arrive in time when we need one?
I am also troubled to know that paramedics face high injury rates and burnout, contributing to staffing shortages and ambulance unavailability. As frontline workers, paramedics and other emergency medical services workers should have decent working conditions.
In health care, the conditions of work are the conditions of care. Poor working conditions negatively affect the ability of workers to provide patient care to the best of their abilities.
I call on the Ontario government to immediately take all the necessary steps to address the crisis in the Emergency Medical Services sector. The people of Ontario deserve better.
